ABSTRACT

HIV AND PREGNANCY



Aims: Analyze the most relevant aspects of pregnant affected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) before, during and after of gestation and inform basic measures in caring and preventing mother to child transmission. Be addressed identifying main risk factors associated with these pregnancies.

Methods: Based on monthly report by WHO and UNAIDS, 2010, through the global detection of the number of new infections in maternity hospitals of capital, people killed by HIV, and registration of prevention and mitigation of symptoms in infected.


Results: According to the reports and investigations conducted, about 30 percent of newborn babies, children of HIV-infected women become infected at birth. As well, it is possible and very likely to become infected through breastfeeding. This would represent twenty percent of total HIV infections in infants.



Despite the existing prevention is currently no treatment that completely eliminates this risk and contagion, and there is no way to diagnose the baby before birth.


Conclusions: The promotion and protection is the key to preventing HIV in pregnant women and vertical transmission of HIV. That is why preventive treatments are very effective in preventing mother to child transmission of HIV. Always in combination with other interventions such as changing diets in pregnant women, women's education to reduce the risk of infection with this virus, educating parents about pending tests for the virus, among others. It is important from this knowledge to promote responsible health and mother - child bond, in this disease process.
